Ireland Fishing Rules & Catch-and-Release Guide
Planning a sea-fishing or bass-lure trip? Start with the official Irish fishing regulations. Check the rules for your species, location and fishing date, and confirm current local restrictions, access, weather and sea conditions before heading out. This short guide is a signpost to official information, not legal advice or a complete statement of the rules.
European sea bass: 2026 guidance
Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Fishing in Ireland website lists the following for 2026: 1–31 January, a two-fish bag limit with a minimum size of 42 cm; 1 February–31 March, catch-and-release fishing only; 1 April–31 December, a two-fish bag limit with a minimum size of 42 cm. Always check the latest official bass guidance before fishing.
Understanding catch-and-release restrictions
An IFI notice dated 8 August 2018 stated: “In recreational fisheries, including from shore, in ICES divisions 4b, 4c, 7a to 7k, only catch-and-release fishing for European seabass shall be allowed. It shall be prohibited to retain on board, relocate, tranship or land European seabass caught in that area.”
Read the dated IFI notice. This historical quotation is not the current year-round rule; use the current official guidance above to confirm the applicable dates and area.
Practical catch-and-release care
IFI recommends tackle strong enough to bring fish in quickly. Barbless hooks reduce damage and handling time and are easier to remove; where barbless hooks cannot be used, single hooks are preferred. Prepare for release before casting and follow the official catch-and-release advice.
Before every trip
Confirm current species rules, seasonal restrictions, bag and size limits, and any local requirements with the official guidance or your local IFI office. Rules can change at short notice. Choosing to release a fish does not replace checking whether fishing is permitted at that place and time.
