The humble perch is one of Ireland's most widespread and rewarding freshwater fish. Found in virtually every river, canal, lake, and reservoir across the country, they're aggressive, hard-fighting for their size, and will take a wide variety of baits and lures. For anglers around Dublin, perch are particularly accessible — the Grand Canal, Royal Canal, River Liffey, and the reservoirs of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains all hold excellent populations.

Whether you're a complete beginner picking up a rod for the first time or an experienced lure angler chasing specimen fish, perch offer something for everyone. This guide covers the best tactics, rigs, and tackle for catching perch in Irish waters.

Where to Find Perch Around Dublin and the Surrounding Area

Perch are structure-oriented fish — they love to ambush prey from cover. When targeting perch, focus on:

  • Grand Canal and Royal Canal: Both canals running through Dublin hold good perch populations, particularly around lock gates, bridge supports, moored boats, and overhanging trees. The canals are ideal for lure fishing and drop shotting from the towpath.
  • River Liffey: The middle and upper Liffey holds perch in slower, deeper pools and around fallen trees and undercut banks. Access is good at many points through Co. Kildare and Co. Wicklow.
  • Blessington Lakes (Poulaphouca Reservoir), Co. Wicklow: One of the finest perch fisheries within easy reach of Dublin. The reservoir holds large perch and is best fished from a boat or by wading the shallower bays.
  • Lough Dan and Lough Tay, Co. Wicklow: Scenic mountain lakes with good perch fishing, particularly along rocky shorelines and around inflowing streams.
  • River Boyne, Co. Meath: An excellent river for perch, especially in the slower, deeper stretches. Accessible from several points and well worth the short drive from Dublin.

Lure Fishing — The Most Exciting Method

Lure fishing is arguably the most enjoyable way to target perch. It's active, visual, and covers a lot of water quickly. Perch respond well to a wide range of lures, but soft plastics are consistently the most effective.

Best lures for perch:

  • Soft plastic shads and grubs: 2–3 inch shads in natural colours (white, silver, perch pattern) or bright colours (chartreuse, orange) on a 3–5g jig head are deadly. Seasonal Perch Fishing Calendar

Spring (Mar–May): Perch become active as water temperatures rise. Lure fishing picks up quickly — target shallow, sun-warmed bays and canal margins. Small spinners and jig heads work well.

Summer (Jun–Aug): Perch move into deeper, cooler water during the warmest months. Drop shotting in deeper canal sections and reservoir channels is most productive. Early morning and evening sessions are best.

Autumn (Sept–Nov): The prime perch season. Fish are feeding hard ahead of winter and shoals of large perch can be found hunting baitfish in open water. Larger lures and faster retrieves trigger aggressive takes.

Winter (Dec–Feb): Perch slow down but don't stop feeding. Downsize your lures and slow your presentation right down. Drop shotting with a tiny soft plastic worked very slowly is often the only method that produces in cold water.
